India produced a stunning batting performance in Christchurch to defeat New Zealand by four wickets, successfully chasing a target of 226 with two balls remaining. Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir played crucial roles as India recorded their highest successful run chase in T20 internationals.

New Zealand posted 225/4 in their 20 overs, their highest T20I total on home soil. However, India responded with 230/6 in 19.4 overs, taking an early lead in the series with an impressive display of batting depth and composure.

Sanju Samson Sets the Pace for India

Samson gave India an explosive start, smashing 67 off just 33 deliveries. Alongside Abhishek Sharma, he helped India race to 93 runs during the Powerplay, putting the visitors firmly ahead of the required rate.

Abhishek contributed 29 from 12 balls before falling to Michael Bracewell’s off-spin. India’s aggressive approach had created an excellent platform, but the chase became complicated once New Zealand introduced spin through the middle overs.

Samson eventually lost his wicket after attempting to cut a wide delivery, dragging the ball onto his stumps. Tilak Varma followed soon afterwards, scoring six from 11 balls, while Ishan Kishan also departed after mistiming an attacking shot against Mitchell Santner.

With three quick wickets falling, India needed a partnership to prevent the chase from slipping away.

New Zealand Fight Back Through Spin

New Zealand’s bowlers briefly turned the contest in their favour through disciplined spin bowling. Bracewell and Santner applied pressure during the middle overs, slowing India’s scoring rate and forcing the batters to take greater risks.

India responded by promoting Axar Patel to join Shreyas Iyer in the middle. Axar attacked the spinners with boundaries and a six, while Iyer provided stability at the other end.

The pair rebuilt the innings and shifted the pressure back onto New Zealand. Although Lockie Ferguson eventually dismissed Axar for 24 off 14 balls, the hosts missed another opportunity when Finn Allen dropped Iyer.

That mistake proved expensive as Iyer and Dhir attacked Santner, collecting 19 runs from the over and bringing India closer to victory.

Naman Dhir Delivers Under Pressure

After Iyer’s dismissal, Naman Dhir took responsibility for finishing the chase. The right-hander remained unbeaten on 42 from just 15 deliveries, showing impressive composure during the closing stages.

Dhir’s clean hitting ensured India did not lose their momentum when the match entered its decisive phase. He struck a boundary and a six in the final over to complete the chase at 230/6 in 19.4 overs.

Samson’s explosive opening innings and Dhir’s late acceleration proved decisive, while Iyer and Axar helped India recover from a difficult middle phase.

Glenn Phillips Powers New Zealand to 225

Earlier, New Zealand made the most of favourable batting conditions after India won the toss. Finn Allen scored 45, while Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 82 to lead the home side to a formidable total.

India’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with all five conceding more than 40 runs for the first time in a T20I. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning to India’s colours after four years, initially found some movement but New Zealand soon attacked the pace bowlers.

Mayank Yadav dismissed Tim Seifert during the Powerplay, while Axar Patel removed Allen after the opener had struck two sixes against him.

Arshdeep Singh later dismissed Daryl Mitchell, leaving New Zealand at 122/3. Phillips and Bevon Jacobs then added 73 runs, with Jacobs making an immediate impact by hitting his first delivery for six.

Phillips reached his half-century from 27 balls, and the pair accelerated towards the end. Their late hitting helped New Zealand finish on 225/4, including 67 runs from India’s final five overs.

However, India’s powerful response ensured the home side’s total was not enough. Samson established the platform, and Dhir completed the job as India secured a memorable four-wicket victory in Christchurch.
