India head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised his team’s performances during the T20I series against New Zealand, particularly highlighting their impressive start and ability to adapt to challenging conditions. India secured a 3-2 series victory, with Gambhir placing special emphasis on the three consecutive wins that gave his side an early advantage.

The coach was especially pleased with how the players handled a demanding international schedule, limited preparation time and unfamiliar playing conditions. India’s aggressive approach during the opening matches demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure, even against an experienced New Zealand side playing at home.

Gambhir Impressed by India’s Ruthless T20I Performances

India’s preparations for the New Zealand tour were far from straightforward. The squad had recently travelled to Japan for the Asian Games, which took place between September 24 and October 3. India returned with the gold medal before quickly shifting their attention to a five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which concluded on October 17.

The team then travelled to New Zealand on October 20, leaving very little time to recover and prepare for the next assignment. India managed just one training session before beginning the T20I series.

Despite the challenging schedule, the visitors produced an impressive run of performances, winning three consecutive matches through aggressive batting and effective run chases.

Gambhir identified the team’s ability to adjust to different conditions and maintain their attacking mindset as the biggest positives from the tour.

He also highlighted the difficulty of facing a quality New Zealand team on home soil, particularly with several Indian players experiencing their first tour of the country.

According to the head coach, the players deserve considerable credit for delivering such results despite having very limited preparation time.

India’s Young Batters Deliver in Crucial Run Chases

India’s opening victory against New Zealand required considerable determination after the hosts posted a challenging total of 225 runs.

The Indian batting lineup made an aggressive start but experienced difficulties during the middle overs. Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs from 28 deliveries to keep the chase alive before Naman Dhir produced a remarkable finishing performance.

Dhir smashed 42 runs from just 15 balls, helping India complete an important opening victory.

The second T20I presented another difficult situation for the visitors. Chasing 188, India found themselves struggling at 70 for five, with the match threatening to slip away.

However, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir and Nitish Reddy combined to guide India towards another successful chase.

Gambhir particularly appreciated the contribution of these three young players, explaining that their performances under pressure demonstrated the team’s growing confidence and depth.

India then produced another outstanding batting display, chasing 199 in just 13.2 overs. The emphatic result further demonstrated their attacking approach and ability to dominate opposition bowling attacks.

For Gambhir, winning three matches in quick succession after only one practice session was a significant achievement.

Gambhir Praises Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy

Gautam Gambhir also expressed his appreciation for Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, pointing out the challenges involved in taking charge of a successful Indian T20I side.

Iyer inherited a team that had enjoyed an exceptional period, including winning the T20 World Cup and maintaining an unbeaten record in bilateral series for approximately two years.

However, the transition also brought new challenges, particularly as India began giving opportunities to younger players following the World Cup.

India had experienced difficult results against Ireland and England before recording victories in Zimbabwe, against Afghanistan and Japan, and during the Asian Games. Their subsequent 2-2 result against the West Indies provided another competitive test before the New Zealand tour.

Gambhir acknowledged that leading an inexperienced bowling attack against established international teams was particularly demanding.

He explained that captains depend heavily on their bowlers and batters to execute plans, making the responsibility more challenging when several players are still developing their international experience.

Despite these difficulties, Gambhir believes Iyer has handled the responsibility effectively and deserves recognition for his work.

Building India’s Next Generation of T20 Cricketers

Another important aspect of India’s approach has been preparing younger players for future international tournaments.

Gambhir believes giving emerging cricketers opportunities during overseas tours is essential for building experience and developing a competitive squad for the next T20 World Cup.

Rather than relying exclusively on established international players, India have been using these assignments to identify and develop new talent.

The demanding schedule has also provided younger members of the squad with opportunities to learn how to manage travel, changing conditions and pressure situations.

Gambhir’s message to the team has been consistent: establish strong standards in T20 cricket and carry that momentum into the upcoming ODI and Test assignments.

India Look to Carry Their Winning Momentum Forward

India’s performances against New Zealand have given the coaching staff several encouraging signs, particularly regarding the team’s batting depth, young talent and ability to chase challenging totals.

The contributions from Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir and Nitish Reddy have demonstrated the value of providing opportunities to emerging players.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s leadership has received backing from Gambhir despite the challenges of managing an evolving squad.

The head coach’s praise reflects the importance of India’s early success in New Zealand, especially considering the limited preparation time and demanding international schedule.

As India continue their international campaign, maintaining the same level of discipline, confidence and aggressive cricket will be important for carrying their T20I momentum into the upcoming formats
