BCCI Permits Temporary Replacements for Remainder of IPL 2025 Amid Exceptional Circumstances
In light of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the temporary suspension of IPL 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a special provision allowing temporary player replacements — a move that will not extend into future seasons, reports Live Cricket Score.
In an official communication to franchises on Wednesday (May 14), IPL COO Hemang Amin informed teams of the revised policy.
“Due to non-availability of certain players due to national commitment or personal reasons, or injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” Amin wrote.
However, there is a key stipulation — any player brought in as a temporary replacement for the remainder of IPL 2025 will not be eligible for retention ahead of the 2026 IPL Player Auction. These players must enter the 2026 auction pool like any other unretained cricketer.
“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year,” Amin added. “Temporary Replacement Players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026.”
He further clarified that under standard IPL regulations, only replacement signings made before the tournament was suspended will be eligible for retention.
Opening the note, Amin referenced the current rulebook, stating:
“As you are aware, the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, under Regulations 6.1(b)(i), permit a player to be replaced if they are injured or ill, provided the injury or illness occurs during or before the 12th League Match of the relevant team in the Season.”
However, with the rescheduled tournament now extending past its original May 25 end date, the BCCI has opted to revisit and relax these provisions.
In this context, Mustafizur Rahman’s inclusion as a replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has withdrawn for personal reasons, will be treated as a temporary replacement under the new guidelines. The BCCI anticipates several more such changes as teams reshuffle their squads in the coming days.
