The Bangladesh Cricket Board appears close to resolving its long-running dispute with Dhaka-based clubs, raising hopes for the return of the Dhaka Premier League — the country’s top domestic one-day competition.
Talks Bring Positive Progress
A recent meeting between board officials and club representatives has brought fresh optimism regarding the tournament’s restart. The DPL is a crucial platform for many cricketers, both financially and professionally, and the delay had caused growing concern among players, including several national team members.
The board is aiming to begin the competition around May 5, while player transfers are expected to be finalized by April 22. However, a final decision will be made after further discussions scheduled for April 12 with clubs from lower divisions.
Domestic Structure Adds Challenges
One of the main reasons for the delay has been the interconnected nature of Bangladesh’s domestic cricket system. Promotion and relegation between divisions mean that unfinished lower-tier leagues — such as the First and Second Divisions — have complicated the scheduling of the DPL.
Key Meeting Led by Tamim Iqbal
The discussions were chaired by interim BCB president Tamim Iqbal, along with members of the ad hoc committee. Representatives from most DPL clubs attended, although a couple of teams were unable to participate due to prior commitments.
Tamim has been actively involved in ensuring progress, not just administratively but also by engaging with players and team leadership.
BCL to Kick Off Before DPL
Before the DPL resumes, the BCB is planning to conduct the opening rounds of the Bangladesh Cricket League. This four-team competition is expected to begin on April 21 and will serve as preparation for Bangladesh’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan.
Once the initial rounds are completed, the BCL will pause to make room for the DPL matches, which are likely to be held across multiple venues in and around Dhaka.
Format Changes Likely
Due to time constraints, this year’s DPL may not include the traditional Super League stage. Instead, the champion could be decided through a single round-robin format, making the competition shorter but still competitive.

Financial Support and Player Safety Measures
To support participating teams, the BCB will provide financial assistance of Tk 25 lakh to each club, along with necessary cricket equipment through the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis.
Player safety has also been given high priority. Following a health scare during the previous DPL season, Tamim has made it compulsory for all venues to have ICU-equipped ambulances available during matches.
Strong Message to Players
In addition to administrative meetings, Tamim held informal discussions with national players and later met team captains Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Litton Das. He assured them of full support from the board while also emphasizing the importance of accountability and performance.
Final Outlook
With talks progressing positively and plans taking shape, the BCB is edging closer to ending the uncertainty surrounding the Dhaka Premier League. If everything falls into place, the tournament’s return will not only benefit players but also restore stability to Bangladesh’s domestic cricket calendar.
