Chennai Super Kings have wasted no time addressing a key squad gap, confirming the signing of Australian left-arm quick Spencer Johnson as a like-for-like replacement for pace bowler Nathan Ellis ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Ellis Ruled Out for the Entire Season
The need for a replacement arose after Ellis, 31, suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury during a domestic one-day final on March 11 — an unfortunate blow that has sidelined him for the whole campaign. With a bowling slot to fill, the five-time IPL champions acted quickly to bring in experienced cover.
Johnson’s IPL Journey So Far
Johnson is no stranger to the IPL, having featured in nine matches across two previous stints. He first arrived in the league with Gujarat Titans, who secured his services for INR 10 crore at the 2024 auction. More recently, he turned out for Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2025 season, playing four games.
His IPL numbers tell a modest story — five wickets at an average of 56.80 and an economy rate of 10.39 — but his raw pace and ability to trouble batters at the death have kept him in demand at franchise level.
PSL Exit Paves Way for CSK Move
Interestingly, Johnson had been lined up to play for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, announced as a direct signing by the franchise. However, he withdrew from that commitment citing personal reasons shortly before the tournament. The Gladiators replaced him with West Indian quick Alzarri Joseph, freeing Johnson up for this move to Chennai.

Australia International Adds Firepower to CSK Attack
On the international stage, Johnson has represented Australia 13 times across both white-ball formats. In T20 Internationals specifically, he has claimed 14 wickets from eight appearances, though his economy rate of 8.96 suggests he can be expensive at the highest level. Nevertheless, his left-arm angle and sheer speed make him a genuine threat in the shortest format.
He joins CSK at a fee of INR 1.5 crore, a relatively modest outlay for a bowler with proven franchise cricket experience.
CSK Open Against Rajasthan Royals
The four-time champions kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30, giving Johnson an early opportunity to make his mark in yellow. With Ellis unavailable for the full season, CSK will be hoping their new signing can hit the ground running from the very first game.
