Chennai Super Kings have wasted no time addressing a key squad gap, confirming the signing of Australian left-arm quick Spencer Johnson as a like-for-like replacement for pace bowler Nathan Ellis ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

The need for a replacement arose after Ellis, 31, suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury during a domestic one-day final on March 11 — an unfortunate blow that has sidelined him for the whole campaign. With a bowling slot to fill, the five-time IPL champions acted quickly to bring in experienced cover.
Johnson’s IPL Journey So Far
Johnson is no stranger to the IPL, having featured in nine matches across two previous stints. He first arrived in the league with Gujarat Titans, who secured his services for INR 10 crore at the 2024 auction. The Gladiators replaced him with West Indian quick Alzarri Joseph, freeing Johnson up for this move to Chennai.

On the international stage, Johnson has represented Australia 13 times across both white-ball formats.
