Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially ended his international cricket career, bringing an end to a remarkable journey across multiple formats. The 38-year-old, who previously retired from One-Day Internationals in June last year, has now decided to step away from T20 internationals, List A cricket and first-class cricket as well.

Although Maxwell will no longer represent Australia internationally, he has no immediate plans to leave the game entirely. He will continue playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Melbourne Stars, with his current contract running until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season.

Maxwell leaves international T20 cricket with an outstanding record. Across 130 appearances, he accumulated 2,897 runs at an impressive strike rate of more than 154. He also registered five centuries, equalling the world record shared with India’s Rohit Sharma for the most hundreds in men’s T20 internationals.

Maxwell Explains His Decision to Retire

Maxwell revealed that discussions about his international future had been taking place for some time, including conversations before and after the T20 World Cup.

Speaking on The Final Word podcast, the Australian explained that there was no pressure from the national team management to make an immediate decision.

Both sides had initially agreed to keep the possibility of his return open while Australia explored opportunities for younger players.

Recent selection decisions, including the opportunities given to emerging cricketers during Australia’s Bangladesh tour, helped Maxwell understand the direction the team wanted to take.

He acknowledged that several younger players had performed well when given their opportunities, making it easier for him to accept that the national team was entering a new phase.

Maxwell Hoped for a Farewell Match at the MCG

One possibility Maxwell had considered was receiving an international farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

England’s upcoming white-ball tour includes a T20 international in Melbourne, creating a potential opportunity for the Australian to play one final match in front of his home supporters.

However, Maxwell admitted that he understood why the selectors were looking towards the future rather than arranging a special farewell appearance.

Australia are expected to make several changes over the next 12 to 24 months as they prepare for future international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games.

The team management wants to give younger players opportunities at the highest level so they can experience international pressure and develop their skills beyond what they might encounter in domestic competitions such as the Big Bash League.

Maxwell admitted that he had briefly imagined ending his international career at the MCG, a ground that has felt like home throughout much of his 15-year journey.

He described the possibility as a small personal hope, inspired by the memorable farewell moments experienced by some of his own cricketing heroes.

Nevertheless, he recognised that Australia’s long-term plans had to take priority.

Fitness and Big Bash League Remain Maxwell’s Priorities

Another important factor behind Maxwell’s retirement was his physical condition.

The Australian had been considering a knee injection to help him prepare for the upcoming Big Bash League campaign. Once the possibility of another international appearance was no longer being considered, he could focus fully on his recovery.

Maxwell explained that he wanted to dedicate more time to strengthening his body and completing another intensive rehabilitation programme.

He is expected to undergo approximately eight weeks of rehabilitation to improve his fitness and ensure he is ready for the Melbourne Stars.

At this stage of his career, maintaining his physical condition is particularly important, as he wants to remain competitive in the remaining tournaments he plans to play.

His decision to retire from international cricket will therefore allow him to manage his workload more carefully while continuing to contribute at franchise level.

T20 World Cup Appearance Marks the End of His International Career

Maxwell’s final appearance for Australia came against Oman in February during the T20 World Cup.

It proved to be his last international outing as Australia failed to progress beyond the group stage of the tournament.

Although the campaign did not finish as the team had hoped, Maxwell’s international career remains filled with memorable performances, remarkable hitting and important contributions across formats.

His five T20I centuries underline his exceptional ability to change matches with the bat, while his aggressive style and versatility made him one of Australia’s most recognisable white-ball cricketers.

A New Chapter Begins for Glenn Maxwell

Maxwell’s retirement marks the conclusion of an important chapter in Australian cricket. His explosive batting, ability to contribute with the ball and outstanding performances in T20 internationals have made him a valuable figure in the modern game.

While his international career has come to an end, supporters will still have opportunities to watch him represent Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

For Maxwell, the immediate priority is recovering physically, maintaining his fitness and enjoying the remaining years of his professional cricket career.

His departure leaves Australia with the challenge of developing younger players capable of filling the gap left by one of their most entertaining and accomplished T20 performers.
