India’s plans for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan have suffered a setback, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya unlikely to feature after sustaining a new injury during his rehabilitation programme. The latest issue is expected to keep him out of the three-match series, which begins in Dharamshala on June 13.

Pandya had been working his way back from a back-related problem at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, a fresh injury has delayed his return to international cricket once again.

Fresh Injury Disrupts Comeback Plans

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to officially confirm the nature of the injury, reports indicate that Pandya suffered a quadriceps strain while undergoing rehabilitation.

The all-rounder reportedly experienced discomfort earlier this week and immediately informed the medical staff overseeing his recovery. Following further assessment and scans at a Bengaluru medical facility, doctors identified a muscle strain that is expected to require several weeks of recovery.

As a result, Pandya will not be available for selection for the Afghanistan ODI series.

Rehabilitation to Continue in Bengaluru

Instead of joining the squad in Dharamshala, Pandya is expected to remain in Bengaluru to continue his treatment and rehabilitation programme.

The three-match ODI series against Afghanistan is scheduled to take place on June 13, 17, and 20. Pandya had originally been expected to link up with the team ahead of the opening fixture but will now focus entirely on regaining full fitness.

The BCCI is likely to announce a replacement player in the coming days.

England Series Remains the Target

Despite the latest setback, there is optimism regarding Pandya’s availability for India’s ODI tour of England next month.

The three-match series is scheduled for July 14, 16, and 19, providing the experienced all-rounder with additional time to complete his recovery.

India’s squad for the England series has not yet been officially announced, but selectors are expected to finalise it shortly.

Rohit Sharma Receives Fitness Clearance

When India initially named their squad for the Afghanistan series, both Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were included subject to fitness approval.

While Rohit has reportedly passed the required medical assessments and is available for selection, Pandya’s fresh injury has unfortunately postponed his return.

The contrasting updates mean India will have their captain available, but must once again manage without one of their most influential all-rounders.

Long Wait Continues for ODI Return

Pandya has not represented India in One-Day Internationals since March 2025. His most recent appearance in Indian colours came during the team’s successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.

The 31-year-old has remained a prominent figure in Indian cricket, particularly after leading Mumbai Indians during the recently completed IPL season. Discussions surrounding his future and fitness have continued throughout the year, making this latest injury setback particularly disappointing.

India Forced to Adjust Plans

With another rehabilitation phase now underway, India’s management will need to explore alternative options for the Afghanistan series. While Pandya’s absence weakens the balance of the side, the team will be hopeful of having him fully fit for the important ODI assignments later in the summer.

For now, the focus shifts to recovery, with both the player and selectors aiming for a successful return ahead of the England tour.

As India prepare to face Afghanistan, all eyes will remain on Pandya’s rehabilitation progress and the announcement of his replacement in the squad.
